Veleta or Pico del Veleta is the third highest peak in Spain at 3,394 metres (11,135 ft). It is just a few metres lower than Mulhacen which is the highest peak of the Sierra Nevada. It can be seen from the city of Granada. Veleta's northern slopes are home to the Sierra Nevada Ski Station. There is a road which goes to within 10 metres of the summit and is the highest asphalted road in Europe. It used to be possible to drive all the way to the top. Traffic is now restricted and it would take 2 or 3 hours to walk from the ski station.
