The Puerta del Vino, or Gate of the Wine, was built in the 13th century, during the reign of Sultan Muhammad II (1273–1302). Its name remains something of a mystery, though it was originally known as the Red Gate (Bāb al-Ḥamra), from which the Alhambra itself takes its name.
Unlike the great defensive gates of the fortress, the Puerta del Vino stands within the walls of the Alhambra, suggesting it was a ceremonial or internal gateway rather than a military one, and many scholars believe it once marked the entrance to the royal quarters and palaces.
