There is a small amount of gold in the River Darro and people used to pan for it many years ago. A bye law concerning the cleaning of the city in 1537 states: "We command that nobody remove sand from the aforesaid river Darro unless to extract gold, in which case he shall fill up the holes he made, or pay a fine of fifty maravedis for damaging the watercourses that enter this city and the buildings of the Alhambra."
