The Alcazaba is the oldest part of the Alhambra complex in Granada, Spain. Built in the 13th century as a military stronghold, it’s a rugged contrast to the palace’s later luxurious gardens and intricate decorations.
Key Facts & History:
Strategic Location: Perched on a hilltop, it offered 360° views of Granada and the surrounding mountains, crucial for spotting threats.
Moorish Origins: Constructed by Muhammad I, founder of the Nasrid dynasty, in 1238. It housed soldiers, guards, and even served as a prison.
Impenetrable Design: Thick walls, towers, and a maze-like entrance (to confuse attackers) made it nearly unconquerable.
